Stakeholder information

Scottish and Southern Energy Power Distribution is committed to communication and engagement with customers and stakeholders who are affected by developments in electricity distribution and transmission.

  • Generation connections

    If you require a new or altered electricity generation connection for a development within SSEPD’s distribution areas, we can arrange this for you.

    Our Generation Connections are looked after by our Distributed Generation and Major Connections Contracts teams. The size of your generation station will determine which team you contact and the process you should follow.

    This leaflet gives some basic information which may help you review the different types of generation, the connection of them and how we process these.

    If you plan to install a generator, or multiple generators, which operate under any of the following conditions we will need the full technical details of the generation equipment proposed, its location and the desired connection point. You will also need to agree a Joint Operating Agreement (JOA) and an Embedded Generation Connection Agreement (EGCA);

    • Limited parallel operation (less than 5 minutes) – a back up generator for essential services (e.g. hospitals). These will not require an EGCA.
    • Parallel operation with no intention to export to our network – a generator where you may need a connection to our network to balance your demand.
    • Parallel operation with intention to export to our network – a generator where you intend to generate electricity to export to our network.

    The chart below will allow you to determine the correct generation connection process.

    Standby generators
    If the generation is provided for standby or back up use only and will have no operation in parallel with our network, then it will need an automatic changeover scheme or a manual changeover which must prevent parallel operation with our network. If automatic, it must be fail-safe against parallel operation with our network. You must provide us with a schematic and description of the proposed operation of your system, for approval prior to installation. In addition, you must inform your nominated supply company. These can be emailed to mcc@sse.com.

    Our Technical Information pages list our Application types, Network information and further documents to assist you.

    Customers can obtain alternative quotations for some work associated with obtaining a connection from the SSEPD network, further information can be found on our connections competition page.

    Connections Help there is a Frequently Asked Questions page, a glossary of common terms and also an opportunity to ask a question.
