SHEPD continues to restore electricity to the remaining 9,000 homes still without power

04 Jan 2012

Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution (SHEPD) engineers are continuing to restore electricity supplies to 9,000 homes which are without power following the substantial damage caused by this exceptional weather event. SHEPD teams have undertaken the equivalent of six months of fault repair work within the last four weeks.

  • The return of strong winds which are forecast for this evening may further hamper progress and, in some cases, cause further damage to the electricity network. SHEPD is monitoring the weather situation very closely.
  • SHEPD’s Emergency Service Centre has taken around 25,000 calls from customers in the past 48 hours. This is two-and-a-half times the number of calls received in an average month.
  • SHEPD is proactively calling hundreds of customers who are without power, concentrating on vulnerable customers and those who will be without power overnight.

We are providing regular website updates (www.ssepd.co.uk) and using social media (http://twitter.com/ssepd) as, increasingly, customers are using smart phones and other mobile devices to get information.

The breakdown of the areas affected and the numbers of homes without power is:

Argyll and West 7,000
Tayside 2,000

It is expected that the vast majority of customers within Tayside will have their electricity supplies restored during this evening.

In total, we expect around 3,000 customers will be without power overnight in the Argyll and West area. We are working closely with Argyll and Bute Emergency Planning to identify and help vulnerable customers in the area who will be without power overnight tonight. Customers who are concerned about vulnerable neighbours should call us on 0800 300 999.
